FIRE and SLEET and CANDLELIGHT………

Words and music from a traditional English Christmas

with

Coope Boyes & Simpson

Fi Fraser, Jo Freya and Georgina Boyes

With bands of carollers and wassail songs, tales of Mobray Pies and ghosts - and hospitable customs like Mumping and Clementing, the Winter season in the English countryside was a time of fireside celebration and travellers’ voices at the door.

Drawing on first-hand accounts of old customs, traditional stories and carols from small towns and villages in the English counties, Fire and Sleet and Candlelight brings these once common experiences back to life.  The incomparable acappella harmonies of Coope Boyes & Simpson, Fi Fraser, Jo Freya and Georgina Boyes featured on an album of music from the production were an outstanding success with audiences on Classic FM, BBC Radio 2 and 3 last Christmas - and led to a sell out live tour in England and The Netherlands.   Their unique words and music picture of the rich traditions of the countryside creates   a performance to delight those with long memories and give a new insight into local life at Christmas past and present.

Fire and Sleet and Candlelight: Regional and Historical Carols

(No Masters NMCD21)

"The powerful, utterly distinctive harmonies of Coope Boyes and Simpson with the additional vocal tones of the Fraser Sisters and Georgina Boyes produce a dense, resonant sonority ... Here are songs from Albion's past to be enjoyed at any season but since it's that time of year ... light the candles, sit close by the fire and wallow in the aural gorgeousness of Coope, Boyes, Simpson, Fraser, Freya and Boyes." BBC Radio 2 website

"Sadly you’re more likely to hear Slade and Wizzard (the true cause of Seasonal Affective Disorder) in every damn retail space you enter over the next six weeks than you are this, a pity really because, unlike 70’s garbage, listening to these songs from these singers actually makes you feel good about this time of year.  An excellent CD and a pleasure to play repeatedly.” fRoots

Classic Cross-over Success for No Masters

Broadcast of tracks from Fire and Sleet and Candlelight (No Masters NMCD21) on Natalie Wheen’s Classic FM programme brought in floods of calls to the station switchboard and bumper sales for this first album by the new acappella six-piece of Coope Boyes and Simpson, Fi Fraser, Jo Freya and Georgina Boyes.  What Natalie Wheen described on air as ‘an indecent number’ of enquiries and hugely positive response from listeners made the album an immediate best-seller and produced a sell-out at every venue on the promotional tour.  Warm reviews from Mojo and fRoots -  “powerful distinctive performances… An excellent CD and a pleasure to listen to repeatedly” also made clear that for Fire and Sleet and Candlelight genuinely appealed across musical boundaries.

Launched with a concert at "Folk in the Fall" at The Purcell Rooms on the South Bank,  the performance was also recorded by BBC Radio 3's Late Junction  and live tracks formed part of the programme's Christmas output.

“There are carol singers and then there are Coope Boyes and Simpson.  Add Georgina Boyes and the two Fraser sister, Jo and Fi, and you have a combination that manages to put the magic back into Christmas.”
