Concerts Passendale / Vredesconcerten Passendale
Peace
Concerts Passendale was founded by individuals and organisations from the
Passendale (the modern spelling of Passchendaele) area of Flanders in 1992.
Each year Peace Concerts’ sponsors a series of productions and
exhibitions drawing on the events of the First War in the Passchendaele area of
Flanders in the hope that they will never be repeated elsewhere.

The
first Peace Concert was devised by Piet Chielens, one of the founders of Peace
Concerts, who was born and lives near Passendale and is still the moving spirit
of the concerts and other events. We Died in Hell - they called it
Passchendaele took its title from the line in the Siegfried Sassoon poem about
the 1917 battle and brought together songs and music from across the world, but
with the common theme of the horror and pity of war. Performed by an
international group including June Tabor, Mark Emmerson and Hew Warren from
Britain, Alfred Den Ouden and Kristien de Hollander from Belgium, Arab and
Jewish musicians, We Died in Hell toured Belgium in 1992 and 1993 and was
recorded on a haunting CD of the same name still available from Peace Concerts
Passendale.

Piet Chielens
This original performance gave rise to a series which brings together musicians from different countries to work on new, classical and traditional songs and music. From the second concert, We’re Here Because We’re Here with Willem Vermandere, Coope Boyes and Simpson and Norbert Detaeye, Peace Concerts Passendale has actively promoted new writing as part of its productions and the role of Peace Concerts in commissioning songs and music that grow out of traditional roots is probably unrivalled anywhere. Themes from some of the Peace Concerts have also been reflected in specially commissioned exhibitions of sculpture, photography and a range of other art forms which have run alongside the performances.
